In 1840, these slaves bought plots in this area with the funds they had inherited and named it Rock Hall Village, after the original plantation, Rock Hall.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: justify;">To facilitate communication in the days before telephones, signal station sites were chosen for their long, clear views of other hilltop stations.&nbsp; Like the others, Gun Hill therefore commands a panoramic view of the landscape below. Built in 1818, it has been restored by the Barbados National Trust and houses a collection of military memorabilia.&nbsp;</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Internal security was the overarching purpose of the stations. They not only provided a way of communicating in emergencies, but were also used as rallying points in the event of civil disorder. The slave rebellion of 1816 must have been a terrifying reminder to colonists, and planters in particular, that they were grossly outnumbered by slaves, a precarious position to be in.&nbsp; It is quite likely that this event motivated the construction of signal stations. The stations also proved useful to announce the approach of ships.</p>

The revolt pitted imprisoned slaves against the bigots and plantation owners of Barbados.&nbsp; Just east of Bridgetown, the Emancipation Statue is the work of Barbados' best known sculptor Karl Broodhagen and symbolizes the breaking of the chains of slavery at Emancipation.</p>

Located in Speightstown, St. Peter, this museum features the interactive story of Barbados, and its rich heritage.&nbsp; Arlington House was also previously the home of the Skinner merchant family for two hundred years. The Skinners owned their own Jetty- &ldquo;Skinner&rsquo;s Jetty&rdquo; which was a stone&rsquo;s throw away. Spearheaded by the hotel&rsquo;s sculptor in residence, Juan Waelder, the new exhibition will display the works of many &lsquo;up and coming&rsquo; as well as established sculptors from around the world, further cementing the hotel&rsquo;s commitment to supporting the arts. The sculptures will be placed throughout the grounds of the hotel, allowing a journey of artistic discovery for guests.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Each sculptor has been carefully selected from the artisan villages surrounding the hotel as well as internationally, all based on their originality and craftsmanship. Sculptors include Betty Gold from Austin, Texas whose large abstract geometric influenced sculptures have been displayed in numerous outdoor public spaces throughout the United States and Spain. Also on display will be pieces by Jorge Oteiza, who has had several exhibitions of his work displayed in the legendary Guggenheim Museum in New York, as well as Jedd Novatt, a New York city native whose sculpture <em>Chaos Mundaka</em> was unveiled as part of London&rsquo;s &lsquo;City of Sculpture Festival&rsquo; in 2012. La Residencia plans to grow the number of artists contributing to the exhibition to 52, making it one of the largest sculpture gardens in Spain.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">The exhibition will showcase a mix of contemporary and classical pieces comprised of different materials and styles, all of which have been sourced by Juan himself. Following the selection, Juan will personally decide where each sculpture is positioned, a painstaking process to ensure that each piece is complemented by its surroundings. With the backdrop of the impressive Tramuntana Mountains and the Mediterranean Sea, the collection will be showcased on the landscaped front gardens and stretch up through the mountainside, positioned around the sun-drenched olive terraces of the hotel. Guests can explore the collection by following the pebbled pathways that meander up towards the hotel terraces.</p>
<p style="text-align: justify;">Over the years, the coastal village of Deia has adopted artists and writers from all corners of the earth who have been drawn by the beauty and bohemian atmosphere of the area. Many of these artists still live in the village, and La Residencia offers exclusive tours of their homes and studios. These &lsquo;behind the scenes&rsquo; tours are conducted by <span style="color: black;">Cecilie Sheridan</span>, whose late husband George was an artist himself and has a permanent exhibition in the hotel&rsquo;s El Olivo restaurant.
